Do You Want To Quit Drinking Coffee?

I quit drinking coffee about two months ago. Before I go any further… Yes, I had terrible headaches, but only for a couple of days and it was worth fighting through because I have never felt better. We live in such a crazed, let’s see how much shit we can fit into one day type of a world and there are a million pressures to do it all… But thinking you need a cup first thing in the morning can be a thing of the past and you will see be able to focus… Naturally!

All that drinking coffee was doing to me was making me a little bit too over anxious… I know I am not alone in this and that caffeine is the cause and is why other people can’t tolerate coffee either. I’m not sitting here saying that drinking coffee is bad for you and you need to stop or else… Because there are surely some health benefits to drinking coffee every day, but I am here to say that since I have stopped drinking it I feel much more calm and mindful in my daily tasks.  Plus, I am saving many pennies!

The first day was the worst… I was not a heavy coffee drinker so I know symptoms and stories are different for everyone, but at about 2PM for 3 days the headache would come on. I had to take Advil for it… But the Advil THANKFULLY worked.

Keep drinking your coffee if you really love it and can’t imagine not having it a part of your daily routine, but if it is something you have been pondering quitting… Go for it! I have had a lot of fun exploring different types of  caffeine free teas in lieu of the coffee. Personal recommendation… Dobra Tea in Portland, Maine. They opened this past spring and are A Bohemian-style tearoom serving and selling over 100 varieties of tea & tea drinks.

But in any case… Do what you love and what works for you!

Have you thought of quitting drinking coffee or have you already done so? If so, I would love to hear your story in the comments section of this blog post below.

Another Year For Improvement

The chitter chatter around he office this week will be, “How was your New Year’s and what is your resolution(s)?” I’m sure many common responses to that question include, go to to gym, write down what you eat, lose 20 pounds, stop going to Dunkin Donuts every morning, the list goes on and on.

I thought about all of those things and other bad habits I could break, but then I decided that what I really want to work on this year is stop swearing… I do too much of it and it’s gross. So if you catch me swearing… Call me out on it, I’d appreciate it. And my other resolution is to not judge others. Everyone has their own story and a reason to why they are the way they are. I think that this world would be a much better place if we were more kind and actually took the time to try and understand, instead of rushing into anger. I have noticed a lot of it lately… Especially in this online world where everyone is an expert.

We are all fighting the same battle called life and it’s much too short to take anything for granted. So that’s that… No swearing and to not judge others until I know their story. To me, it’s just the wrong thing to do.

I hope that you all had a wonderful holiday and New Year’s… And I look forward to a wonderful 2012! Health, love & happiness to you all!

Do you have the winter blues? You are absolutely NOT alone!

This is a topic that not many people want to talk about or even feel comfortable talking about. Depression. It really effects so many people and I am beginning to think it is mostly caused by all of the pressures that we all endure in this crazy world. For 40 million Americans, anxiety disorders are debilitating and omnipresent, and women are twice as likely to suffer as men, according to the Anxiety Disorders Association of America.

I find myself feeling more blue and down once September is over… Those shorter days and 4:00PM sun settings can really take a toll after so long. I wasn’t going to blog about this topic because I was afraid that too many people would judge me and think I’m crazy, {You might already think that and that’s OK, because we’re all a little nuts!}, but I just ultimately want to be able to help anyone else out there that is feeling sad or depressed. There is nothing wrong with you and it isn’t anything that cannot be fixed. Try to always remember that. Our minds are so extremely powerful and I couldn’t agree more with people that say that they wish they could just shut their brain off and RELAX!

Depression should not be something that we are so sensitive in talking about because 40 million women is not a small number! It doesn’t mean there is anything wrong with you, your brain just may be wired a little different, but there is help for that! Spring and summer are definitely my favorite times of the year and I am always jealous of those that absolutely LOVE winter and the snow. I am already counting down the days until spring… For real!

However, we can’t change the seasons but we can change our attitude about how we approach the winter blues. This time of year with the holidays has got to be the most stressful time of the year… Wouldn’t you agree?

I have found that for myself, yoga has been a lifesaver! If you have never tried it, please do… There are so many advantages physically and mentally and right now I’d just like to focus on those things that are going to make you happy and feel good about yourself. Getting outside and going for a walk, visiting with a neighbor or friend and doing things that you know will keep you busy may help to reduce the stress and anxiety.

If it is work that is stressing you out… Don’t let it. It’s not worth your health. It just isn’t. And unless you are a doctor, no one is going to die if you aren’t running a marathon at work trying to get everything and then some done just so that you don’t disappoint anyone.

The power of positive thinking is amazing… As long as you can force yourself to do it. Counseling and therapy as well as some natural remedies have helped me… Especially that Vitamin D… That’s my happy pill in the winter! :)

Don’t worry, be happy! :)

How To Stay Healthy Through the Holidays

Now is the time of the year that tends to become tricky when it comes to keeping or getting yourself in shape. There are WAY too many temptations! I try to stay on track every year, but it is so hard! I have the biggest sweet tooth ever. I love to have something sweet after each meal. Yup, I am probably addicted to sugar, but I know I am not alone. The holidays are the worst for this! We all feed into it though… {pardon the pun}, but aren’t we all bringing the sugary and sweet treats to the party? I’m guilty! I LOVE to bake yummy treats! OK, so you want to be as healthy as you can so that once January 1st comes you aren’t one of the crazy ones trying to find a parking spot at the gym at 6PM. Because let’s admit it, you’re not fooling anyone, not even yourself. You need to stick with it and I know you can do it. I put together some things that will most certainly help. It’s also important to stay flu free… because who knows what insane outbreak the government wants to scare us with this flu season… Right?

  •  Make a plan – Remember that in the short couple of months between Thanksgiving and New Year’s, you will most likely be eating foods that you avoid the rest of the year. Think your choices through… “A minute on your lips = A lifetime on your hips!”  You don’t have to forbid yourself from the eggnog or Grandma’s famous mud pie, but you do need to plan out how much is OK for you to keep that body of your’s healthy. You work so hard the rest of the year… Don’t fall off now!
  • Watch the alcohol – I know, I know!… “Watch the alcohol during the holidays Meg?! How am I going to make it?” You’ll make it… Trust me! And you will feel a hell of a lot better! You really can reverse everything you have done by justifying a couple of cocktails.
  • Be consistent – Try to keep your routine and plan as many workouts as possible. I like to work out first thing in the morning… Do it whenever you know you will have time. Focus on how great you will feel when it’s over. Don’t lose that thought.
  • Take a complete multi vitamin - You should always be taking a multi vitamin {at least that’s what my doctor tells me}, so make sure that this time of the year is no exception. I put might next to my birth control pills… It works! I remember! I also have set the daily reminder on my iPhone to remind me to take both.
  • Everything in moderation – Write down everything that you eat and drink or make note of it in your phone. If you write it down, you own it. And if you own it, you will be less likely to put that bad food item into your mouth. Right? At the very least, if you start keeping a daily list, you will be so much more conscious of your choices. You may be surprised. I know I was when I first started paying closer attention a couple of years ago.
  • Be active – Include the family! Go for a walk or play a football game in the backyard. Remember that the holidays are a time for you to have fun and enjoy your family and friends. You could also fire up the Wii or pile into the car and head out to go ice skating.
  • SLEEP! – Make sure that you get plenty of rest. It really is more important to your health than you think. The holidays are stressful enough, so make time to relax and recharge.
  • Psssst! You don’t HAVE to say “Yes” to every party. You don’t. And don’t feel bad when you have to RSVP and say you can’t make it. Don’t fly around like a maniac trying to make an appearance at every party. It’s just ridiculous.
  • Spread out your meals – You don’t need to eat everything all at once. Eat dinner, go for a walk and then have dessert.
  • Wash your hands & Disinfect! - Remember that the holiday season is also flu and cold season. You can never wash your hands too much. However, I find that they get so dry during this time. Keep a good lotion on hand. Check out some of the best body lotions {via ConsumerSearch} that are out there. Disinfect your work station, keyboard and mouse. I keep the Clorox wipes right at my desk {And my office is in my house!} to wipe away germs and keep sickness awayyyy!
If you try to be conscious about what you are doing and how it will make you feel… You won’t be that person that is scrambling to get on board with some sort of healthy resolution come January 1st, you’ll be that person that is already there and you really won’t even think about going back.
If not now, then when?

Why I Love Bikram Yoga

If we are friends chances are you have heard me talk about Bikram Yoga and I have probably tried to get you to come to class with me. It’s an amazing experience that some may associate with “hell” [amateurs!], but I like to think of it as the ultimate mind and body challenge. And, well that’s exactly what it is. About a year and a half ago I went to my first Bikram yoga class and I was absolutely amazed at what it did to my body [I have an old back injury from high school] and how it made me feel [depending on your weight you will burn between 500 - 800 calories per class!] I have even gotten my fiance Nate to go class with me several times, pushing through the mental and physical challenge, and feeling like a million bucks at the end of the 90 minute class.

Bikram Yoga is HOTTTTT yoga, the room is usually at about 101 degrees Farenheit. The class is 90 minutes long and you go through an intense, 26 postures, each done twice. But don’t freak out because anyone can do it. My biggest advice is to make sure you hydrate enough before class and only breathe through your nose [with the exception of the first set of standing deep breathing exercises, called pranayama].  Once you start breathing through your mouth you throw your nervous system all out of whack and that’s when you start to panic and hyperventilate, feeling like you won’t make it through. You need to remain CALM! And as long as you do that, you will eventually train yourself to flow through the postures and they will become easier each and every time.

I love Bikram Yoga because it is a complete body workout. I also love to sweat and if you love to sweat out all the yucky toxins in your body, you want to come to this class.

If you are a runner, you NEED to try this yoga practice. There are many reasons why runners love Bikram:

  • You sweat! Remember that 90% of your body is made up of water, so flushing out toxins and re-hydrating with fresh water will keep your body very happy and healthy. Your skin will love you for it too!
  • You can practice with an injury! If you are a runner, chances are you have had injuries over the years. Get to Bikram! It will cure your injuries [even the old ones that you didn't realize were holding you back in your performance] and keep you in shape. The postures will help to flush out old scar tissue and other yucky toxins leaving your body flushed and back to its natural state [Think for a second of all of the toxins and chemicals in everything... Yeah, wicked scary!]
  • You will build tremendous lung capacity! 90 minutes of Bikram is equivalent to 90 minutes of running as far as your cardiovascular system is concerned.
  • It was improve your posture and give you an incredible spine! After you have been practicing for a while you will notice a wonderful improvement in your back and the way you feel sitting at your desk for eight hours a day. ;)
  • You will sleep better than ever! Make healthier food choices and overall I guarantee that you will feel so much better about yourself, inside and out. Yoga also is responsible for making your body much more immune to disease and sickness.
  • Bikram Yoga will give you the mental push you need that will help you realize that as humans, we have the potential to do absolutely anything we want to do. If you can dream it, you can do it. We all can agree and say “Yeah, yeah, yeah, yoga is great for you…” but this mental and physical challenge will change your life for the better. I guarantee it!

Are you open to trying Bikram Yoga? The 1st step is to have an open mind and the confidence that you can do it! If you live in or around the Portland, Maine area you need to go visit Michael & Angela at their studio, Maine Bikram Yoga. They are both amazing teachers! Your first class is free and they have free childcare [Ages 4 months and up!] Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 9:30AM and on Saturday’s at 2:00PM, so no excuses!

If you already practice Bikram Yoga, what is biggest benefit or difference that is has made in your body and/or mind?!

Legal disclaimer – I am clearly NOT a doctor so don’t listen to what I just said until  you check with your doctor to make sure it is OK for you to practice Bikram Yoga. :)

Cape Elizabeth, Maine. Fort Williams & Robinson Woods

I have lived in Maine my entire 26, almost 27 years of life. I have been going to Fort Williams State Park AKA Portland Head Light since I was born. It became a family tradition very early on to visit Fort Williams with my mom, dad and my little brother, Sean. We would stop at DiPietro’s Market on Cottage Road in South Portland on our way to the park to get the BEST Italian sandwiches I have ever tasted & then a quick stop at The Cookie Jar to get cream horns! A little side note…I still stop at DiPietro’s on my way, but The Cookie Jar was a casualty of a storm in October 2006 that ripped off the roof  & forced the closure of what had become a tradition for many. The bakery will be re-opening this June & I could not be more excited to get my hands on a cream horn once again :) So despite the lack of the famous cream horns, this adventure still makes for a spectacular afternoon. I have always been fascinated by the huge mansions that line Shore Road on the way to Fort Williams. I always tell myself, “Someday! I will own one of those homes”. & well I will…someday. :)

I am running a 10K…At least that’s my goal.

So about a month and a half ago my boyfriend Nate signed us up to run the TD Banknorth Beach to Beacon 2010 10K Road Race which is being held on August 7, 2o1o. I am now kinda sorta regretting what I got myself into. 6 miles?! That is further than I have ever run. Ever, ever. I do not like to run and to be quite honest, I never really have enjoyed running. Well, I didn’t mind it so much in high school when I played field hockey, but maybe it was more interesting to me because I was running after a ball, not just aimlessly running for the sake of running. This is the 10th year anniversary of this race. It is a 6.2 mile (10K) run, starting at Crescent Beach and ending at Portland Head Light, both of which are in Cape Elizabeth, Maine. Last years race had 6,000 runners and approximately 10,000 spectators.  Joan Benoit Samuelson, a native of Cape Elizabeth, Maine, won the 1st ever women’s marathon in 1984 at the Olympics in Los Angeles & is also the founder and co-chair of the 10K race.

Are you looking for something to do outside this Spring?!

Since becoming the owner of a Golden Retriever puppy about a year ago & living in the Portland, Maine area, I have made it a priority to find and seek out trails & hikes that we can explore & enjoy. I have always loved being outdoors. When I began to research trails and hikes in the area, I immediately discovered trails.org. AH HA! Just what I was hoping to find. This is the website is dedicated to the 50 mile network of trails in Greater Portland, Maine. There are so many options for trails in this area. There really isn’t an excuse to why you cannot get outside and get some exercise. (Well maybe if it’s raining) Bring your dog to enjoy the fun too! Mostly all of the trails allow dogs, but  I grew up in the woods of Maine…well sort of…it isn’t as rural as it sounds, but as a young adult when I moved to Portland, I thought “Oh great, here goes my love for wildlife and nature.” Not true at all. I encourage all of you to check out the Portland Trails. Plus it’s free, so it really doesn’t get much better than that :)

They survived Bikram Yoga…

But as they said…”BARELY!” On Superbowl Sunday, I brought 3 friends, one of which was my boyfriend Nate & challenged them to the 90 minutes of what they may now consider to be hell. I have been going to Bikram Yoga classes since December 29th & I am hooked. Almost everyone that asks what exactly it is and what they should expect, wants to try it. I would tell someone that hasn’t done it before that it is probably the most intense workout they have ever had. Seriously. I didn’t sugarcoat it at all, except letting them know that the benefits from this practice are nothing short of amazing.

We went to the 2PM class at Bikram’s Yoga College of India in Portland, Maine. We ate about 3 hours prior to class & made sure to drink plenty of water. I know from my own experience, that the first class is quite nerve wracking. You have no idea what to REALLY expect & all the anxious feelings do not help. I realized that there is a class full of about 30 other people that are there for the same reason you are & it really does not matter if you can or cannot do all of the postures. The important thing is that you got in your car, drove your butt to class & made the commitment to be there. The important thing is to just stay in the room which at times feels like your worst enemy at about 100 degrees Fahrenheit (but no more than 105 degrees Fahrenheit). All 3 of my friends achieved that goal & stayed in the class. There were a couple close calls when I thought I was going to lose them to the cool locker room, but I didn’t. They did an excellent job & maintained a positive attitude throughout the entire 90 minutes. I told Nate that if he remembers one thing to do throughout the practice, it is to be mindful of your breathing. You should breathe in through your nose and out through your nose & try to keep a  CALM mind. I made sure to let him know that when you start breathing through your mouth, your nervous systems freaks the heck out & that is when you lose the mental concentration that you need to be successful in getting through the class without panting like a dog. I hope that everyone that tries one class, comes back! Don’t give up! It really gets easier the more you do it & the harder it is for you, the more your body NEEDS it! I think that my 3 friends were very proud of themselves for doing it, as they should be, but the question of the day is…Will they go back?

Are you skinny fat? What does that really mean?

My New Years’ Resolution for 2010 is to be more healthy & more positive. I have been doing Bikram Yoga for the past month and have noticed a HUGE difference in how I think and go about doing things in my life & my body. After a few days of the Bikram yoga, I jumped on the scale, hoping to see the number that I am used to seeing, go DOWN! I noticed that the scale had gone up a couple of pounds, but my BMI (body mass index) had gone down? I saw a clip from the Today Show yesterday discussing women that are “skinny fat.” I thought to myself  “skinny fat?” What the heck does that mean?!

After doing some research on this, I have come to the conclusion that I am skinny fat! I have what seems to be a normal weight (about 130 pounds…give or take), but according to Nate’s scale, I have a BMI of about 28%. Holy moly…so that means I am about 30% fat? Yes, that is what that means. Women that look skinny on the outside & have been blessed with “skinny genes”, are not necessarily healthy, which can be problematic later on down the road. I have realized that yoga is helping me switch the fat to muscle and that muscle weighs more than fat…so that would make sense to why my jeans are fitting better, & why the number on the scale has gone up a couple of pounds. Per my research & the video I have posted, I learned that the average woman in America has a body mass index between 25% & 30%. Yup, that’s me! I fit right in there. You SHOULD have a BMI of between 14% & 24%. And ONLY 27% of women exercise regularly! I think that there are A LOT of us out there that are skinny fat. Men & women! We seem to think we are healthy because we look skinny, but the scary thing is, that what is going on inside your body is very unhealthy. I have made a promise to myself to get my BMI down to about 15% by this Summer. I guess my message is that no one is going to get you healthy for you, YOU have to make the commitment to yourself & do it! Also, check out this to learn about what the Today Show had to say about being “skinny fat,” just yesterday. So girls & boys, get to the gym, go for a walk, take a class (I find that I have more motivation if I am in a class with other people suffering at the same rate I am, rather than trying to exercise on my own) and make a promise to YOURSELF to be a healthier & better you! ;)
