Another Year For Improvement

The chitter chatter around he office this week will be, “How was your New Year’s and what is your resolution(s)?” I’m sure many common responses to that question include, go to to gym, write down what you eat, lose 20 pounds, stop going to Dunkin Donuts every morning, the list goes on and on.

I thought about all of those things and other bad habits I could break, but then I decided that what I really want to work on this year is stop swearing… I do too much of it and it’s gross. So if you catch me swearing… Call me out on it, I’d appreciate it. And my other resolution is to not judge others. Everyone has their own story and a reason to why they are the way they are. I think that this world would be a much better place if we were more kind and actually took the time to try and understand, instead of rushing into anger. I have noticed a lot of it lately… Especially in this online world where everyone is an expert.

We are all fighting the same battle called life and it’s much too short to take anything for granted. So that’s that… No swearing and to not judge others until I know their story. To me, it’s just the wrong thing to do.

I hope that you all had a wonderful holiday and New Year’s… And I look forward to a wonderful 2012! Health, love & happiness to you all!

I’m Back…

I took a little bit of a break from posting on my blog… As some of you have noticed. I had a real defining moment when I realized that unfortunately, not everyone in this world is about helping one another. It really bothers me that so many people will do such unexpected things to get ahead… Or try to get ahead. I do believe in karma… I have to.

Yes, I have opinions, some of them are strong. I am not aiming to please everyone. I don’t think anyone in this world ever should. If you don’t like them, that is fine, I am open to your opinion, but to be quite honest, if you are going to continue to pick on me and bash my thoughts and opinions, I suggest you get your own damn blog and perhaps take a hike. I won’t be offended. ;) Life is too short to be an asshole and miserable. So be happy, enjoy every day and be thankful every day… Not just those 30 days in November… Ai yi yi!

I can dish it and I can take it, but I have feelings too and I think a lot of things said online get very misconstrued and taken way out of context… I welcome your thoughts. But be a nice person, OK? :) Thanks!

Listen to Playboy’s Miss November Ciara Price on WJBQ 97.9

This week on my radio segment, Stiffler’s Social Scoop with Teddy McKay, on WJBQ 97.9, we had Playboy’s Miss November 2011, Ciara Price as a special guest! She is Maine’s 2nd Playboy Playmate this year and is from Buxton! Yes folks, Buxton! :) I have been friends with Ciara for a couple of years, so this summer when I heard that she had made Playmate, I knew I HAD to get her on the show! She put me in touch with her publicist this week to set up the interview on the Q!

Live radio can be interesting though! Anything and everything can happen and that’s what makes it so exciting! You can listen to the clip below of our interview by clicking on the “Listen Below” play button. We had a little technical issue and lost Ciara during our call, but we got her back! So make sure you listen! We talk about everything; including Hef, Halloween and what it’s like in the grotto at the Playboy Mansion! ;)

Steve Jobs: Putting A Ding In the Universe

Yes, I thought I’d be one of the millions to blog and write about what Steve Jobs has meant to me and my everyday life. But it’s just not me, it’s all of us. Was he the greatest technological innovator of our time? He definitely has my vote on that one. It was his vision and mission to humanize personal computing. He rewrote the rules of user experience design, hardware design and software design. He changed the music business and started an all out war between the wireless carriers.

We all have our own story of what Steve Jobs means to them and my personal story started when I was just nine years old.

I remember when my family got their first computer. It was 1992 and the best computer for their money at the time was a Tandy. [You can argue that fact if you'd like, but it was what we could afford at the time... And it wasn't cheap!] I remember that computer very well… I also remember that it really wasn’t user friendly. Remember DOS? Do you remember using an IBM computer for the first time and thinking “What in hell have I gotten myself into?” Back then I wasn’t doing too much with a computer besides playing games [educational of course!] and playing with the encyclopedia. I do not remember the “Internet” or AOL at all… That came a couple of years later…

This leads me to my family’s second computer… It was 1995… I was in 5th grade when my parent’s bought that Hewlitt Packard. I remember being in school and all I wanted to do was go home and play with the Encyclopedia Britannica CD-ROM. I thought that was the coolest thing EVER! I never thought I would have been so fascinated by looking up the word “heart” in that encyclopedia. But I truly was. I spent hours exploring what information that encyclopedia contained. I could have never imagined then of what was to come of personal computing… Did anyone? Anyone but Steve that is. ;)

At this time, I really hadn’t been around or used an Apple or Mac computer. The reality was that they were too expensive for my family to have one. The other thing was that all I ever heard was “The real world doesn’t use Mac’s, they use IBM’s.” That was OK though because I thought I was the luckiest little girl with my HP and that Encyclopedia Britannica CD-ROM. :)

In 1996 I entered middle school, I was fortunate enough to go to a school [Bonny Eagle Middle School] that had received

The 1st computer ever built by Apple.

a huge grant that had allowed an addition to be built, three state of the art computer labs [filled with iMac's!], as well as a computer, phone and television in every single classroom. It was freaking fantastic!

I wanted to be in those computer labs as MUCH as possible. I really did! All of the other girls were more concerned with   who was “going out” with who [like that EVEN matters when you are twelve years old] and what they were going to wear during gym class now that they got to use a locker room a change outfits for class. There weren’t organized school sports until 7th grade, so for my first year of middle school I was a true first generation computer geek. I joined the Computer Club and spent everyday after school going to the computer lab. I honestly don’t even remember what we exactly we did, but I do remember using First Class Client. That was sooo amazing to me! It was what we now know as email, but to us it was a way to talk to each other without actually, verbally talking to each other. I’ll never forget that little red flag. :)

The possibility of what this technology was and could be was so incredibly fascinating to me. I can only wonder what those big tech titans of the 80′s and 90′s thought of it all as well. Guy Kawasaki, who was an Apple Evangelist back then explained it as like “being paid to go to work at Disneyland every day.” That means it had to be just as awesome as I always imagined it to be. And I think we all know that it really, really was.

The years went on, technology and the use of computers in my life increased, as it did with everyone. It wasn’t until I turned 21 that I had another “Oh WOW!” moment when it came to a product that Steve Jobs had created. Maybe it was because while I was growing up, so was Apple. The iPod was cool, but after dating a guy in high school that had a computer in the trunk of his car with an MP3 player, that he built and wired himself, it kinda took a little bit more for me to go “Oh wow, that’s cool!”

I’ll never forget the first time I saw and got to use an iPhone… I was absolutely blown away and all I could think and say was “That’s sooooo cool!”

“What was is that was so cool?” It was the design and the way it worked. And that is exactly what Mr. Jobs’ mission was… To create a great user experience.

My favorite quote from Steve Jobs, is this; “You can’t connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards. So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future. You have to trust in something — your gut, destiny, life, karma, whatever. This approach has never let me down, and it has made all the difference.”

Thank you Mr. Jobs. Thank you for thinking differently. You have most definitely left the biggest ding in the universe that I have seen thus far in my life. And to all those IBM lovers of the world… It seems to me that the real world DOES use Mac’s… Right?

If you could ask Mr. Jobs one question what would it be? For me, I’d ask… “Did your birth mother know that you never graduated from college?”

Vote for Jeff & Sam! Clay Hill Farm Green Wedding Giveaway Finalists!

For the past few years, Clay Hill Farm in Cape Neddick [York], Maine has given a free green wedding to a couple that demonstrates commitment to sustainable practices and inspiring others to do the same.

One of three finalists, Jeff Court and Samantha Smith [Vote here!] have shown how a commitment to the Earth parallels their commitment to each other. Jeff and Samantha have been together for over 9 years.

This is their story:

We met when we were 17. Jeff is from Arundel, Maine and Samantha is from Buxton, Maine. We “officially” became an “us” on January 3, 2002. We went to different high schools (Thornton Academy and Bonny Eagle respectively), and went on to different colleges (Wentworth Institute of Technology and Quinnipiac University). We both decided to further our education. Samantha went to law school at Southern New England School of Law and Jeff is currently getting his Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering at Worcester Polytechnic Institute. On January 3, 2009, Jeff proposed on Mother’s beach in Kennebunkport, Maine. Currently, we are living in Worcester, Massachusetts.

We work on being green in many ways. Perhaps our most considerable impact is achieved through taking a strong look at how we live and taking into consideration what we truly need and use. Reducing consumption provides more significant results than simply reusing or recycling, which we also do. We like to live a life style that shows others that reducing the natural resources one consumes is not difficult and in fact can improve ones quality of life.

Over the last few decades, home sizes have increased year after year, yet family sizes have decreased. These days, people feel the need to build homes with unnecessary extra space, where as during previous generations homes were built to suit a family’s needs and size. We currently reside in a small, one bedroom apartment that helps reduce our environmental impact in many ways. The reduced square footage is easier to heat, which significantly reduces the fuel consumption to warm the space. The small rooms and the fact that there are only a few of them also reduce the lighting costs. The living spaces are all shared, so a couple lights are effective at illuminating all spaces. Also, the small living space allows us to take a look at the physical possessions we accumulate. With a large home, it is very easy to fill it with physical items, many of which, will only be used or appreciated a few times and left to collect dust. Each one of these items has a history, which requires some amount of energy and natural resources to manufacture and ship it to the end user. By having a small amount of space to keep possessions, it allows us to focus on a select number of items that are really important and useful to us. The limited number of distractions inside allows us to spend more time appreciating the world outside and all nature has to offer.

Our car is another way we like to demonstrate how having less does not mean one has to sacrifice. About a year ago we purchased a Smart Car. It is about half the size of a conventional car, but provides all of the services one typically needs. The smaller car requires less raw materials to manufacture, but still meets all of our daily needs. Also, we have reduced waste by utilizing reusable bags when grocery shopping and not purchasing bottles of water. We each have Sigg aluminum water bottles, which we use daily.

Through living a life style of reduced consumption we are able to demonstrate to others that large sacrifices don’t have to be made in order to do great things for the planet. Being green does not have to be overwhelming. We have made small changes to our daily lives and will continue to find green ways to live. We have made a commitment to each other and we have made a commitment to reduce waste.

Jeff and Sam have embarked on a five-week public voting campaign to garner votes with their inspirational environmental message, while creating a community give-back campaign/program to celebrate the shades of green that make a difference in their community.

Their community giveback is two parts. First, they are working to get a community garden started at Jeff’s university (WPI in Worcester, Massachusetts) so their giveback will continue year after year. The second part is reducing trash in their day-to-day lives and documenting it on their ‘ Trashing the Trash‘ blog  it so others can follow and learn some of their great ‘being green’ tips!

The voting ends this Sunday, April 3rd at NOON and the winner will be announced on Friday, April 8th!

Please watch their video and help them win the green wedding of their dreams! If they have inspired you to be more green, like they have for me, [I LOVE that Jeff had Sam's ring made from recycled metals... Green genius! ;) ] Please vote for them right HERE!!!

Why You Should Never Take A Nude Photo

This subject has always been something that I just have not been able to understand. Throughout my entire adolescence, cell phones, computers and the Internet were the new and upcoming thing, and  I can always remember hearing my peers talk about sending naked pictures to their boyfriends or girlfriends. Are you out of your damn mind!?!? Do you really not have any respect for yourself? It absolutely blows my mind that these people, mostly young women, are so willing to send such compromising photos. Have some respect for yourself. If you aren’t going to show any respect for yourself, who will? I think that like many things, those people don’t think about what they did until after they did it, and by then it’s just too damn late. [Read more...]

She said “Yes!”

WOW, the past couple of days have been very exciting! Where should I begin? I guess I could go back two and a half years ago to when I met him, but that is quite a long story and those of you who know us know how amusing it is, so I will fast forward to 2 days ago…

We had recently been talking seriously about marriage. I knew that with coming up on 3 years together and a boyfriend who had recently turned 30, we were not far away from an engagement. I just didn’t know it would happen SO soon.

Cinco de Mayo AKA “Cinco de Drinko” & The history of the Margarita

You either love them or you hate them. There really is no in between when it comes to whether you enjoy this type of drink or not. I have not always loved margaritas. In fact, until about 2 years ago, I would avoid them like the plague! I do not know why I did not like them for so many years, but I have a strong inkling that it had something to do with crappy margarita mix somewhere along the way!

There is no arguing that the best and most important part to any margarita is the tequila! If you make it a rule to always choose a clear tequila, instead of those cheap golden colored ones, you will probably survive a night of drinking margaritas. But I can’t promise anything. ;)

The history of Cinco de Mayo or May 5th dates back to 1862 and the Battle of Puebla. It is not a obligatory federal holiday in the United States or in Mexico, but that sure doesn’t mean we don’t celebrate with Mexican food and of course, margaritas! The Mexicans beat the French in an unlikely victory on May 5, 1862, which led to a celebration! And so now we have come to know it as, nothing else much really, EXCEPT for a drinking holiday. That seems to be a common trend amongst us Americans. Any excuse to drink right? I am not a huge fan of drinking, in fact, I would recommend you stay away from alcohol if you have the tendency is be an annoying or mean drunk. (Probably 1/2 the people I know…sorry, love you guys!) No one wants to deal with you if that is the case. AND never, never, ever, ever think it is okay to drink and drive. Because it’s not & you’ll get caught & it will cost you a lot of $ and you’ll feel like an ass when its all said & done.

I’m back!!! Some random thoughts…

Sorry kids…I know it has been quite some time since I have posted a new entry here, but I am back now & better than ever! I have found that since I have created this blog, that I am constantly asking myself “Is that a bloggable topic?” I came to the conclusion that anything is bloggable, and as long as you are going to write it and put it out there, people will find and read what you have to say. They may keep their opinion to themselves, or they may not, but I can guarantee that what you had to say will have an impact on someone, somewhere…someday. Sometimes I think the only way to reach people effectively nowadays is through the powers of the Internet. What was life like before the Internet and wicked cool Apps invaded our homes and our lives? Think about it. Are we heading in a good direction or have we gone too far with technology? Sometimes I really wonder.
