You either love them or you hate them. There really is no in between when it comes to whether you enjoy this type of drink or not. I have not always loved margaritas. In fact, until about 2 years ago, I would avoid them like the plague! I do not know why I did not like them for so many years, but I have a strong inkling that it had something to do with crappy margarita mix somewhere along the way!
There is no arguing that the best and most important part to any margarita is the tequila! If you make it a rule to always choose a clear tequila, instead of those cheap golden colored ones, you will probably survive a night of drinking margaritas. But I can’t promise anything.
The history of Cinco de Mayo or May 5th dates back to 1862 and the Battle of Puebla. It is not a obligatory federal holiday in the United States or in Mexico, but that sure doesn’t mean we don’t celebrate with Mexican food and of course, margaritas! The Mexicans beat the French in an unlikely victory on May 5, 1862, which led to a celebration! And so now we have come to know it as, nothing else much really, EXCEPT for a drinking holiday. That seems to be a common trend amongst us Americans. Any excuse to drink right? I am not a huge fan of drinking, in fact, I would recommend you stay away from alcohol if you have the tendency is be an annoying or mean drunk. (Probably 1/2 the people I know…sorry, love you guys!) No one wants to deal with you if that is the case. AND never, never, ever, ever think it is okay to drink and drive. Because it’s not & you’ll get caught & it will cost you a lot of $ and you’ll feel like an ass when its all said & done.
The traditional margarita is made with tequila, lime juice, triple sec, limes, ice & salt. There are many twists & different recipes, so Google away & find your favorite.
There are 2 questions you will be asked when you order a margarita. Frozen or on the rocks? Salt or no salt? I used to enjoy frozen margaritas, and don’t get me wrong, I still do, but brain freeze will take over from you enjoying the marvelous flavor as it touches your lips.
So, I order on the rocks now, but of course I do make an exception every once in a while…usually in the summer! Too much salt can ruin any margarita. I say NO to salt whenever possible, because I mean REALLY? Are you that interested in licking a salt rim? Yeah, that’s what I thought too. Haha! So next time you are out to dinner, out with your friends or out this evening to celebrate Cinco de Mayo, order a margarita and enjoy!!!
*I thought I would include the “traditional” way to drink tequila (Just in case some of you get a little carried away tonight with the tequila)… I got this from “The Cocktail Bible” by Linda Doeser.
The traditional way to drink tequila is to shake a little salt on the back of your hand between the thumb and forefinger and, holding a wedge of lime or lemon, lick the salt, suck the fruit, & then down a shot of tequila in one!
OR enjoy a more civilized version of this drink and order a margarita!
