So about a month and a half ago my boyfriend Nate signed us up to run the TD Banknorth Beach to Beacon 2010 10K Road Race which is being held on August 7, 2o1o. I am now kinda sorta regretting what I got myself into. 6 miles?! That is further than I have ever run. Ever, ever. I do not like to run and to be quite honest, I never really have enjoyed running. Well, I didn’t mind it so much in high school when I played field hockey, but maybe it was more interesting to me because I was running after a ball, not just aimlessly running for the sake of running. This is the 10th year anniversary of this race. It is a 6.2 mile (10K) run, starting at Crescent Beach and ending at Portland Head Light, both of which are in Cape Elizabeth, Maine. Last years race had 6,000 runners and approximately 10,000 spectators. Joan Benoit Samuelson, a native of Cape Elizabeth, Maine, won the 1st ever women’s marathon in 1984 at the Olympics in Los Angeles & is also the founder and co-chair of the 10K race.
Each year a different Maine-based, non-profit youth organization is chosen as the beneficiary of the race. The foundation will provide the organization that is chosen with $30,000. This year Junior Achievement of Maine will be the beneficiary of the 2010 TD Banknorth Beach to Beacon 10K.
In last month’s Fitness magazine, I found an article called “Beginner Plan: Cross the Finish.” Well, that pretty much sums up exactly what I am trying to accomplish. It provided a detailed plan for 8 weeks. I ripped that sucker out of the magazine and put it on our fridge. Where it has remained. I haven’t started this training regimen yet, but I know that I had better get my buns in gear if I hope to successfully RUN & not crawl across the finish line on August 7th. As soon as the rain stops this week…(looks like it will be nice again on Friday), I am going to start week 1, day 1 of this plan, which is to walk 2 miles, run 1 mile & then walk 2 more miles…I will be posting my progress…so check back…I promise I will most likely make you smile
